History of Marcoola Surf Club

picture

The Marcoola Beach Surf Life Saving Club began on a Sunday morning in 1969 outside the Marcoola Beach Kiosk.
Our first clubhouse was a single storey fibro building completed in 1970.  With the growth of the area and influx of ex-nippers moving into senior ranks, this building was demolished and our present two storey building was completed in 1984.  Many extensions have been added since then.

Today, Marcoola SLSC has approximately 100 active members, 35 award members and 140 associate members.  We have a strong base of junior and cadet members, and approximately 130 nippers, ensuring Marcoola is well placed now and into the future.  To date, 20 Life Members have been elected.

History of Marcoola Nippers

The Marcoola Nipper Club was also founded in 1969, and was up and running prior to the commencement of patrols by the senior club.

Twenty-two members made up the first season squad, and they went on to place 3rd in the March Past at Branch Titles.  In addition, they won 11 pennants over 3 carnivals in their first year.  Named the "Marcoola Dolphins" it followed on that the Dolphin became our club emblem and still is to this day.

In 1979 Marcoola was the first club on the Sunshine Coast to form a Nipperette (girls) Club prior to females being allowed in the movement.  At the time Branch officials were not impressed, and we were severely reprimanded for our actions.  As it turns out, one year later in 1980, women were finally accepted into the surf lifesaving ranks.
